Jacksonville's Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration!

Lincoln 200

Lincoln Bicentennial Book Project Moves Forward!

On May 19th, 2008, Jacksonville Lincoln Bicentennial Co-Chairs Mayor Ron Tendick and Loreli Steuer presented District 117 Superintendent Les Huddle and Curriculum Director Carol Kilver that a check for almost $50,000 has arrived from the State of Illinois. The funding has been awarded to purchase a Lincoln book for each public and private school student in Jacksonville from kindergarten through 12th grade. Samples of the books selected are displayed on the table to the right. The books will be part of the fall school curriculum, serving as a resource for citywide contests in reading, writing, artwork, and quiz bowls on the history of Lincoln’s life and times and his contributions as America’s 16th President. The commission is also partnering with local communities on their bicentennial plans.

Voices of Jacksonville!

We hope you enjoy your time in Jacksonville, and the Looking for Lincoln — Voices of Jacksonville audio tour. The tour is designed to make the voices of our history come alive, and tell their stories in an interesting and educational way. The tour is designed to be enjoyed by all ages, and all levels or interests in history.

When you arrive at each destination, tune your car radio to the frequency noted in the brochure or on the posted sign. If you have questions during your tour, call the Jacksonville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at (217) 243-5678.

Jacksonville has a rich and vibrant history beyond Abraham Lincoln. The city was home to two Civil War generals, a vocal abolitionist community, an active Underground Railroad network, and more!
