Learn.
Opportunities abound!

Education has been an important component of the Jacksonville community since its very earliest days. studyIn fact, when you see a picture of Abraham Lincoln reading under a tree or by candlelight, you can bet that the textbook he is reading came from Jacksonville’s own Illinois College. Lincoln, who never went to college, worked for Mrs. Green at New Salem. Mrs. Green’s sons attended Illinois College and when they would come home on breaks, Lincoln would read their textbooks. He is quoted as saying he learned grammar from the textbooks of the Green boys.

With two private liberal arts colleges - Illinois College and MacMurray College, Lincoln Land Community College, the Illinois School for the Deaf and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, Jacksonville is definitely a place of learning. Educational opportunities abound for people of all ages, from the youngest children to adult students who seek new challenges.
