Home Owner Tips

HomeSummertime means vacation time for many residents, but nothing can ruin a nice getaway like returning home to find it has been burglarized.  Homeowners can do a lot to help protect their homes by using common sense and taking steps to ensure their home does not become the target of a crime.

The most important thing you can do to keep your home safe while you are away is to give your home a lived-in appearance.

  • Ask neighbors to pick up newspapers, mail or any packages that may be delivered.
  • If you don't already have a lawn service, hire someone to cut and maintain the lawn while you're away.
  • Don't leave a message on your answering machine that reveals that you are out of town.
  • Have your lights coming on and going off at different times by using a timer.

    Gardening Tips

    plant

If you need to use pesticides to control July pests such as the Japanese beetle or Mexican bean beetle, always follow label directions.  Use only as much as you need. Avoid applying in mid-day heat to prevent leaf burn, on windy days when chemicals can drift on to your skin or other plants, or when plants are in flower and bees are present.

    Historical Notables

During the 1830s and 40s, when activity in the American Underground Railroad movement was at its height, the community of Jacksonville in west-central Illinois was home to a significant number of white and free black citizens who were strongly anti-slavery. A number of these individuals were so committed to abolishing slavery that they risked their own lives and freedom by assisting runaway slaves on their arduous journeys to Canada.

Today, nine different sites in greater Jacksonville have been identified as stations on the local Underground Railroad network where members secretly worked together to hide and shelter the runaways until they could be safely moved to the next station on their journeys north to freedom The Underground Railroad Committee of the Morgan County Historical Society was formed in 2003 in an effort to identify and preserve these historic sites so that the stories of the courageous freedom-seekers and those assisting them might never be forgotten.
